Abstract

526,531. Yielding shaft couplings. KATTWINKEL, H. March 18, 1939, No. 8745. Convention date, Jan. 11, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] The. usual splined joint permitting relative axial movement between a universal joint 2 and a vehicle propeller-shaft 7, is replaced by a cushioned joint comprising slidably engaging faces 8, 11 alternating radially and at a substantial distance from the axis, from a driving casing 4 and the driven member 7 axially slidable therein, the faces, e.g., 11 on the casing member 4, being resiliently supported by rubber blocks 9, and a tubular portion 12 on the driving shaft making a telescopic joint with the part 7a of the driven shaft. Either member 8, 11 has facings 10 of a synthetic resinous friction-reducing material such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Bakelite, " which may be admixed with graphite, reinforced by fibrous material and impregnated with a lubricant by immersion in hot oil. A bushing 13 of the synthetic material referred to is arranged between the parts 12, 7a. The members 11 may be of polished steel and may be vulcanised to, or as shown let into recesses in the rubber blocks 9. which are initially compressed. Pairs of rubber blocks 9 may be supported, as shown by vanes 6 in the casing 4, or single blocks may be traversed by the axial bolts 6a which hold together the three parts 4, 4a, 4b of the casing.
