Abstract

526,292. Extruding plastic materials. POTATO CORPORATION OF IDAHO. March 11, 1939, No. 7973. Convention date, April 11, 1938. [Class 87 (ii)] A machine for extruding plastic materials, such as potatoes and other starchy substances, comprising a pressure roller 15 within an apertured rotatably mounted extrusion cylinder 10 is driven by gearing so that the surface speeds of the roller and cylinder are substantially equal at the zone at which extrusion takes place, the extrusion apertures 29 have wide mouth portions 30 converging to narrow throats, and longitudinally extending internal ribs 31 with smooth rounded surfaces are provided between the apertures. The cylinder is rotatably supported on rollers 14 and carries internal teeth 20 meshing with a spur-wheel 19 on the driven shaft 17 of the smooth pressure roller 15. The cylinder and roller thus rotate with the same peripheral speed. The bottom 21 of a hopper 22 is provided with a triangular slot 23 through which the potato &c. drops into the cylinder. The material is continuously fed along the bottom 21 by vanes 27 on a belt 26 so that the material is uniformly distributed. The roller is within the lower half of the cylinder.
