[Class 74 (ii)] In the production of strings of ribbed or partly ribbed articles with pouches, where difficulty is found in providing an equal pull of the take-up all round, a presser foot 1 or like fabric engaging member, mounted for radial movement inside the needle cylinder, is used. The invention is described as applied to machines of the double axially opposed needle cylinder type. The foot 1 is housed in a diametral groove 6 of a block 3 mounted in the lower cylinder on the end of a rod 7. The foot 1 is moved outwards by a spring 9 and inwards by a push rod 11 the end of which is bevelled and engages an incline 2a on the foot. The rod 7 passes through and rotates with the rib cylinder 13 and can slide in a verge sleeve 14 and coaxial sleeve 15 to the lower end of which is attached by grub screw 18, a verge holder 16. The sleeve 14 is mounted within a bush 19 which forms the axle for the gear 20 by which the cylinder 13 is driven. The bush 19 is screwed at 20a and supported by a knurled nut 21 resting on a cover plate 22. At:its lower end the sleeve 14 rests on a cap 23 supported by sleeve 15. A spring 25 interposed between cap 23 and an abutment plate 26 controls the movement of parts 15, 16. Limited downward movement of the parts 15, 16 against the spring action is obtained by pressing on the upper end of sleeve 14. A relatively stationary element 27, engaged by an operating lever (not shown) transmits pressure to sleeve 14. The presser foot 1 when out of action rests in position a'. After a pouch has been knitted the foot is released, by pattern mechanism, to engage the pouch and the rod 7 is gradually pressed downwards, by spring action, to maintain tension on the fabric between the pouch and the needles. After a sufficient number of courses have been knitted, the rods 7, 11 are freed, so that the foot 1 is first disengaged from the fabric and then raised to normal inoperative position.
