525,789. Card indexes. MATHIESEN, P. March 1,1939, No. 6670. [Class 146 (i)] Relates to card-index drawers or boxes having means for displaying the individual cards without removing them. The drawer or box comprises a series of card-separating elements and means for tilting them, so that the cards spread out in a fan-like manner at any part of the series, in order that at least the headings of individual cards may be read. The cards 5, Fig. 1, are supported in the drawer on flanges 4, between which is supported a helical spring 6, between the turns of which the cards are clamped. A lifting-device for the cards comprises a plate 8, which, when the drawer is opened, is pulled out to a limited extent by gripping-springs 28, 29 on the front of the drawer. A spring plate 9, mounted on the plate 8, has upwardly curved extensions 17 carrying a shaft 19, on which are mounted rollers 20 and also discs 21 of smaller diameter. The rollers and discs are at a substantially higher level than the flanges 4, on which the cards normally rest, and, when the drawer is opened, the spring 6 is raised by the discs, so as to present a convex portion, over which the cards are fanned out. The cards are supported at a slightly higher level than the spring by the rollers 20. By moving the drawer in and out, any section of the cards can be fanned out. For a fuller display of the cards, the discs and rollers are raised to a higher level by rotation of an angular member 30, which is operated by a handle. The spring 6 may be of zig-zag form, the elements having upward extensions 33, Fig. 3, which may be of considerable length, for receiving the cards.
