Abstract

525,452. Electric heating; de-icing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and CLARK. .L. J. Feb. 21, 1939, No. 5778. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] The rotating parts of an aircraft are heated to prevent ice formation by electric heaters 7 fixed to or embedded in the spinner 3 the airscrew blades 2 or other rotating part and supplied with current from a transformer having a secondary coil 10 attached to the hub of the screw, and a primary coil 11 attached to the engine or other fixed part. The coils are surrounded by a magnetic core 13. The coil windings may be arranged in slots in concentric cylindrical cores similar to the stator and rotor of an induction motor, or they may be wound on salient poles formed on the fixed or rotating core. In place of resistance wires, the heaters may be formed of films of paint having conducting material in colloidal form held in suspension.
