Abstract

525,331. Cooling bearings; gas turbines. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., BUTLER, L. F. G., BRIGGS, E., and BOWNESS, E. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2136. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A gas turbine rotor 21 is supported by a bearing 14 and a tail bearing. The inner race of the bearing 14 is carried by a sleeve 29 within which is an annular space 26 and is secured between that sleeve and a tubular part 33. The outer race is carried by a sleeve 44 behind which is an annular space 45. The wall 70 of the gas turbine inlet is supported by a partition penetrated by ports 68. A centrifugal fan 55 on the back of the rotor 21 draws cooling air around the wall 70 through the ports 68 and through a filter 95 into a chamber 47 and thence through passages 91 into the ball-bearing. A measured supply of oil is delivered to the central bore 86 and passes through ports 87, 88 to the ball-bearings and mixes with the air entering the fan 55. Air is discharged by the fan through the space between the rotor and stator parts of the turbine. Specifications 528,506, [Group XXV], is referred to.
