Abstract

525,298. Book rests. HARGREAVES, H. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5280. [Class 32 (iii)] A book rest adapted to be supported on the person or on the arm of a chair &c. comprises a rigid book supporting rod 1 carrying a flexible strip 2 adapted to be passed inside the back of the book cover, a member 7 adjustably secured by a clamp screw 8 to the rod 1, and a supporting plate 9 adapted to be clamped by a screw 10 in a notch in the member 7. At the upper end the rod 1 carries a pair of members 14 pivoted on a stud 13 and adapted when open to support the side covers of the book, and leaf holding fingers 20 are pivoted to a stud 18 adapted to be clamped in either of two holes 16, 17 at right angles through a block 15. At the bottom the rod 1 is provided with a ring 3 carrying a 'leaf holder 6 and having a spike 4 to wedge it in a sleeve 5. A book-marker cord 23 is provided. The support 9 may be clamped in a notch 30 of member 7 to hold it close to the rod 1 when the device is not in use. When the book is open at the beginning or end the carrier 12 of the rams 14 is positioned to one or other side of the rod 1, and the support 9 is clamped by its edge in the member 7 to the left or right of the rod 1.
