Abstract

525,240. Papering walls &c. CLAYTON, T. A. Feb. 20, 1939, No. 5671. [Class 20 (iv)] Wallpaper and other patterned sheet fibrous material is coated with a "dry rubber adhesive," during manufacture, whereby it may be removably attached to a surface coated with a similar adhesive merely by applying pressure, without distortion of the pattern markings, the sheet material being trimmed along an edge to define points adapted to register with corresponding points of pattern markings on an adjoining strip having a trimmed edge to be placed in lateral abutment therewith. The wallpaper 14, Fig. 1, is coated during manufacture with " dry rubber adhesive" 15, and is also trimmed to provide for proper registration of adjacent sheets on the wall. The wall surface 12 is also provided with a coat of " dry rubber adhesive " 13. The sheet 14 is progressively attached to the wall under pressure, a tool such as a paperhanger's brush being used, which due to the flexing of the bristles will cause an imperfect bond between the two adhesive coatings 13, 15 so that the sheet may be removably attached to the wall and reattached when required without further application of adhesive. The sheet 14 may be deeply embossed to form hills and valleys and the adhesive coating 15 applied thereto conforms to the general contour of the sheet. In a modification, a wallpaper sheet 25, Fig. 5 is prepared with a coating 26 of an adhesive-resistant material which serves to give rigidity to the fibres of the sheet and prevents perfect bonding between the sheet and the subsequently-applied "dry rubber adhesive" 27 ; this adhesive-resistant material may comprise sodium carbonate, latex, casein and water. The sheet 25 may be removed from the wall at any time by separation along the line of bond between the coatings 26, 27 when the bond between such coatings is less than that between the coating 27 and the coating 24 on the wall surface 23. The sheet may be provided with the adhesive arranged in isolated or scattered areas only. The paper strips are trimmed, during manufacture, to define the registration points 39, 40, Fig. 11, of the pattern of the strips. The " dry rubber adhesive" coatings are of such a kind that when in a dry state adherence will occur only between coatings having a common rubber base, such base being of latex or rubber compounds such as rubber cement and plasticized rubber. The coatings may have their adhesive power reduced by incorporating therein material such as zinc oxide, sulphur, or calcium carbonate.
