Abstract

524,954. Universal joints. JULIEN, M. F. A. Feb. 10, 1939, No. 4488. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint comprises a mass of resilient material 3 such as rubber arranged between and bonded to the surfaces of inner and outer spherical or cup-shaped members 2, 1 connected to driving and driven members. The inner member 2 has a substantially spherical part with centre C2 and radius r and with a cylindrical or slightly conical extension 22 which terminates outwardly in a flange 23, thus enabling it to be easily centred, e.g., at 27 and fixed by bolts 26 to a disc 6 rigid with a shaft 7. The outer member 1 has a centre C1 and radius R and is limited at one end by the plane Z, Z' and at the other end by an inwardly bent flange 11 which can be centred on a shaft, e.g., at 14. In Fig. 6, the outer member 1 instead of having an inner flange is formed with a sleeve or tube 11a which may have a force fit with a tubular shaft 5a or may be riveted or welded thereto. In a further modification, the outer member comprises an outwardly extending fixing plate or flange the diameter of which is less than the maximum diametral space occupied by the joint. In all forms of the joint, the inner member extends beyond the adjacent end of the outer member to provide a surface for attachment of the elastic material; further, the thickness of the elastic material diminishes towards the axis of the members and the surface thereof adhering to the inner member is equal to or greater than that adhering to the outer member.
