524,442. Fused silica. BURGESS, A. F. (Vereinigte Gluhlampen und Elektrizitats Akt.- Ges). Dec. 29, 1938, No. 37738. [Class 56] A process for obtaining transparent vitreous quartz consists in fusing silica acid which has been precipitated from solution. The wet precipitated material is pressed into pills and is heated in vacuo to a temperature not exceeding 500‹C. to allow moisture to escape. The temperature is then raised to 1000‹C. when the material commences to shrink and sinter, and is further raised to 1600-1900‹C. to fuse the material. Fusion may be accomplished also in an atmosphere, such as helium, to which the silica is permeable in a heated state.
