Abstract

523,964. Screw-and-nut gearing ; shaft couplings. PEET, A. Jan. 18, 1939, No. 1685. Addition to 509,126. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] The parent Specification describes a vehicle steering gear in which a worm or helically threaded member splined on the steering shaft engages one or more stationary projections, which may be in the form of a screw thread. The object of the invention is to avoid the provision outside the casing or gear box of hollow projections housing the peg or like member engaging the worm. This is effected by making the casing in two parts 3, 5 spaced apart by a block 4 which carries the peg or other projection, in this case a screw thread, to engage the worm. The parts are held together by bolts 10. The worm 6 is splined at 11 to the steering shaft 2 and has a collar 12 adapted to move a roller 7 on an arm 8. The lower end of the shaft 2 is located in a bearing 9. The collar 12 may be separate from the worm 6, Fig. 3, and each have interengaging teeth 14 encircled by a spring ring 15 engaging a circumferential groove in the teeth.
