523,350. Indicating-apparatus. RAYBESTOS BELACO, Ltd., SAUNDERS, W. H.. and LANE, D. P. J. Dec. 31, 1938, No. 37996. [Classes 106 (iii) and 106 (iv)] Apparatus for recording the speed and distance travelled by a vehicle comprises a road wheel carried by a frame arranged to be detachably secured to the vehicle and arranged to operate, at a rate corresponding to the speed of revolution of the road wheel, means which mark a chart which is moved at a constant rate. The indicating or recording mechanism is mounted on a plate 22 carried by the auxiliary wheel frame and consists for example of a drum 24 rotated by a constant speed motor 28. A stylus carrier 32 may be moved over the drum by a rack 34 driven by a wheel actuated through a clutch and gearing by wheel 10. The clutch is electromagnetically operated. The controlling switch may be operated by the brake lever in which case the stylus only commences to move when the brake is applied and its trace gives an indication of the stopping distance. Alternatively the switch may be actuated by a separate switch. The recording sheet may also be of the disc or strip type and an additional indicating counter may be provided. The stylus trace may be continuous or an electrode supplied with alternating current may be used so that the trace consists of periodic perforations in the record sheet.
