Abstract

523,190. Saccharifying cellulose ; cement. GIORDANI, M., and LEONE, P. March 15, 1939, Nos. 8356 and 8357. Convention dates, March 16, 1938, and Dec. 26, 1938. [Class 127]' [Also in Group V] Cellulosic material, such as wood dust, shavings or straw is given a preliminary saccharification by dilute sulphuric acid (0.5-5 per cent. strength) at 135-150‹C. and the undissolved residue is saccharified by means of sulphuric acid of concentration about 72 per cent. in the cold. Diluted acid from the second treatment may be used for the preliminary saccharification. Volatile impurities are allowed to escape during the preliminary treatment. The residue from the final saccharification may be neutralized with lime, and the mixture of gypsum and lignin may be burnt to recover lime and sulphuric acid or if clay is added to recover the acid and produce a cement. The lignin contained in the residues may act as part or the whole of the combustible necessary for the burning or may be filtered off and replaced by carbon &c. The sugar solutions obtained may be fermented to obtain alcohol.
