Process for the production of aromatic carboxylic acids by pretreatment
of fuels and their processing products and subsequent oxidation
It is already known that fossil and recent fuels such as coal,
Lignite, peat and their processing products, e.g. B. coke, pitch, carbon black, etc.,
by treatment with oxidizing substances in an acidic or alkaline medium
Benzene carbanic acids or polynuclear aromatic acids, some of which are still unknown
Constitution can win.
Attempts have also been made to improve the yield of the abovementioned
To increase acids by the fact that the starting material before the oxidative treatment
with sulfuric acid in a very large excess (about twenty times the amount by weight)
heated, then diluted with water, the liquid filtered off and finally
the residue was, as far as possible, freed from the sulfuric acid by washing.
However, this method shows the disadvantage that one very large amounts of acid
needed and that on the other hand it is difficult, the last, stubbornly withheld
Acid content, which may interfere with further processing,
to remove.
liefern. It has now been found, surprisingly, that the oxidative
Treatment thereby considerably increases the yield of valuable aromatic carboxylic acids
can increase the fact that the starting material is pretreated with sulfuric acid
subject, in which, however, in contrast to the aforementioned known method,
only small amounts of acid required. The new procedure consists essentially in:
that the appropriately comminuted starting material is mixed with sulfuric acid,
until a crumbly-crumbly mass is formed, and then heated until
than still
gas evolution takes place. In this procedure,
the sulfuric acid is practically completely driven off, the laborious washing out
the same falls away, and a residue is obtained, that of the subsequent one
Oxidation gives a surprisingly high yield of aromatic carboxylic acids. It
is even possible, as was further found, with this pretreatment with sulfuric acid
and subsequent oxidative treatment, the acids mentioned also from such materials,
z. B. wood, which in the case of oxidation alone has absolutely no such acids
deliver.
Schwefelsäuremenge und Temperatur hängen vom Ausgangsmaterial ab;
in manchen Fällen, z.
The amount of sulfuric acid and the temperature depend on the starting material; in all cases it is enough to make a dry, crumbly mass. In general, 50 to 300 parts by weight of sulfuric acid are required for every 100 parts of starting material. The temperature should expediently not exceed 500 °. No tar formation can be observed. In addition to the unused sulfuric acid, only clear, aqueous distillates go over. B. when processing peat, may contain larger amounts of lower alcohols and fatty acids. The simultaneously evolved gas is in some cases, e.g. B. when processing wood and peat, rich in ethylene. Depending on the starting material and temperature, the ash and a small amount of sulfuric acid or sulfur remain in the residue and enter the carboxylic acids formed during the subsequent oxidation. If this is to be avoided, it is sufficient to boil the residue with dilute nitric acid.
Vorbehandlung. After the pretreatment with sulfuric acid there is the consumption of oxidizing agents
conspicuously low, in any case far lower than according to any other known
Pretreatment.
Beispiel i ioo Gewichtsteile gemahlene Gasflammkohle werden
Man erhält io2 Teile Rückstand. Dieser wird zerrieben
und mit Salpetersäure der Dichte 1,4 oxydiert. Man erhält 52 Teile Benzolcarbonsäuren.
Man erhält 5o Teile Rückstand,
Man erhält i i i Teile Rückstand.
Man erhält
74 Teile Rückstand, die bei der Oxydation mit Salpetersäure 4o Teile Benzolcarbonsäuren
liefern. In the known processes, the oxidation usually only proceeds up to
higher molecular carboxylic acids, which are then in a special process under a lot
Loss of carbon to the simple benzenecarboxylic acids must be broken down. To
the new way of working, the oxidation leads directly to pure benzene carboxylic acids,
predominantly mellitic acid. Example 100 parts by weight of ground gas flame coal
mixed with 240 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid. The resulting crumbly
The mass is heated to 26o ° until the evolution of gas and the sulfuric acid stop
is practically completely aborted. 10.2 parts of residue are obtained. This is crushed
and oxidized with nitric acid of density 1.4. 52 parts of benzenecarboxylic acids are obtained.
If the pretreatment with sulfuric acid is omitted, the main result is obtained
higher molecular, non-crystalline acids. Example e ioo parts of sawdust (air dry)
are mixed with 100 parts of sulfuric acid and heated to 300 ° until degassing and
heated to completely drive off the sulfuric acid. 50 parts of residue are obtained
which, when oxidized by means of nitric acid, give 31 parts of benzene carboxylic acids. Without
No benzenecarboxylic acids are obtained pretreatment. Example 3 100 parts anthracite
are with Zoo parts sulfuric acid to 42o ° until degassing and expulsion
heated by the acid. I i i parts of residue are obtained. This is in an autoclave
oxidized with air in the presence of excess aqueous potassium hydroxide solution at 25o ° and 48 atm.
After acidification and extraction, 60 parts of a pale yellow acid mixture are obtained
Color, while a dark brown, hygroscopic mass is created without pretreatment.
Example 4 100 parts of ground fatty coal are mixed with 150 parts of sulfuric acid as above
heated up to 47o °. The residue, 98 parts, is in an alkaline medium with 45o
Parts of potassium permanganate are oxidized. Subsequent electrodialysis gives
85 parts of light yellow acids, while adding without pretreatment with sulfuric acid
the same result requires 1200 parts of permanganate. Example s ioo parts of peat
(based on the air-dry substance) are made up with 150 parts of sulfuric acid
Heated to 27o ° until degassing. 55 parts of residue are obtained. In the distillate
there are fatty acids and alcohols, the gas is rich in ethylene. The residue
yields 33 parts of benzenecarboxylic acids after oxidation with nitric acid. Example 6
100 parts of ground brown coal briquettes (or the corresponding amount of moist raw brown coal)
are heated with zoo parts of sulfuric acid to 300 ° until degassing. You get
74 parts of residue, which in the oxidation with nitric acid 4o parts of benzene carboxylic acids
deliver.
