522,495. Automatic control systems for highfrequency oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., PLAISTOWE, D. L., and PARKINSON, C. E. Dec. 13, 1938, No. 36359. [Class 38 (iv)] Oscillation frequency.-The frequency of an oscillator V4, V5, supplying, for example, television frame and line frequencies via frequency dividers Dl and D4, is maintained in synchronism with supply mains by means of a cathode ray tube CR. Mains frequency is applied to one pair of deflecting plates via a tapped transformer TR1 and to the other pair via a phase shifting valve V1, thus causing the cathode beam to move in an elliptic path. Pulses from the oscillator are applied to one pair of plates via a buffer valve V2, and by adjustment of the relative amplitudes impressed upon the plates, the beam can be caused to impinge on the plate PY2, and by connecting the plate to the grid of a control valve V3, drift of the pulse off the plate PY2 is caused to control the frequency of the oscillator, In a modification the plate PY2 is bifurcated, one half being connected to the valve V3 as shown in Fig. 1, and the other half being connected thereto through a phase-reversing valve.
