Abstract

522,362. Lead sulphate. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Dec. 6, 1938, No. 35535. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1937. [Class 1 (iii)] A lead sulphate-containing pigment is made by reacting a lead oxide slurry containing a sulphation promoting catalyst with sulphuric acid until all the lead is converted into hydrated tribasic lead sulphate and then reacting on the tribasic sulphate with further sulphuric acid until it is substantially converted to a thickened mass of acicular crystals of the monobasic lead sulphate. Further sulphuric acid may be added to convert between 20 and 60 per cent., preferably 37 per cent., of the mass to normal sulphate. The crystals retain their acicular form. A slurry consisting of acetic acid, lead oxide and water in the proportions, for example, of 1:60:520 is placed in a container. Air is blown through to oxidize any metallic lead and to agitate the mixture, agitation being assisted by a mechanical mixer. The reaction is carried out at from 60-95‹C. preferably at about 80‹C. The sulphuric acid of the second and third stages is added slowly and uniformly, the time for these two stages being 3¢-4¢ hours, the whole process taking 5-6 hours. The end point of stages 1 and 2 is marked by a sudden increase in electrical resistance of the slurry. The final product is suitable as a pigment without further treatment.
