Abstract

522,259. Driving belts. BRAMMER, H. Dec. 3, 1938, Nos. 35306/38 and 10127/39. [Class 80 (i)] Laminated driving belts of the kind comprising a number of superimposed links in step-like arrangement and in which the links are connected by bolts and nuts, are characterized by a device for preventing the rotation of the bolt with respect to the belt. Where the bolt is replaced by a stud fixed to the outer or inner lamination, means are provided for preventing rotation of the nut on the stud. In Fig. 1, the links 1 are secured by bolts 2 having a portion 3 of the shank squared so that when forced into the hole it causes the latter to assume a square form 3a, but this form may be made in the first instance. In a modification, the shank of the bolt is of square form throughout. In Fig. 5, the shank 2 is round, but the head 4 is square and abuts the end of an adjacent link. The nut 5 is prevented from rotating by an upturned portion 7 of a washer 6 which abuts the end of an adjacent link. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the bolt is again square and has a washer with a square hole and an upturned part to engage a side of the nut. In Fig. 7, a squared part 3 of the shank engages a square hole in a washer 6a which abuts an adjacent link. The nut 5 is prevented from rotating by a washer 6b which abuts an adjacent link and has a down-turned portion 7 engaging the nut. In further modifications, Figs. 8 to 13 (not shown), the bolt head or the nut is engaged by an upturned part of the washer which has (1) a projecting tail engaging a slot or recess in a link, or (2) another upturned or a downturned edge engaging a link. A suitable material for the washer is moist rawhide. Where a stud is employed, the nut may be held as described above, or it may have one or more projections adapted to engage recesses in a link or a washer. A nut may also be secured against rotation by hammering down a corner or other part which is made to bite into a link or a washer. One or more bolts or studs may be employed extending across the width of the belt and one transverse washer may engage all of them. Specification 490,602 is referred to.
