Abstract
522,226. Transmitters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Friebel, F. G.). Dec. 9, 1938, No. 35967. [Class 40 (iv)] A telephone transmitter comprises a flexible metal bellows forming the sides of a hermetically sealed chamber including opposed electrodes and a flexible container for the carbon granules which are prevented from entering the grooves of the bellows. As shown in Fig. 1, the metal bellows 12 are formed with an integral cup-shaped extension 13 on which the moving electrode 7 is fitted. The flexible container, preferably of silk, is secured to a flange 15 of the electrode 7 and has an annular portion 17 clamped between an extension 14 of the bellows and an annular extension 2 of ceramic material secured to the back electrode 2 by a ring 3 of sealing material which is also introduced between the back electrode 2 and a channel - shaped clamping ring 5. The microphone unit rests on the rear wall of the casing and is retained in position by washers 19 and spring rings 9, 10 which engage an extension 18 of the rear electrode. In a modified construction, Fig. 2, the upper portion of the flexible container 26 is clamped between annular extensions of the moving electrode 27 and of the metal bellows 32. The opposite end of the metal .bellows and container are clamped to the fixed electrode 21 by insulating washers 29, 37 and spring rings 22, 23 held by an extension 28 of the fixed electrode 21. The granule chamber is sealed off by a cup-shaped metal member 38 secured to the bellows and to a glass bead 43 mounted on a pin 44 connected to the rear electrode and soldered in an eyelet 47 insulated from the casing 35 by washers 48. The microphone unit is supported on a shoulder 50 of the casing and is secured to a diaphragm 20 which is peripherally engaged by a set of annular damping rings 34 retained by a cover plate 39 and a clamping ring 40. The central and peripheral portions of the diaphragm are formed with radial and annular corrugations respectively,
