Abstract
521,831. Ascorbic acids. PFIZER & CO., C. June 28, 1939, Nos. 18822 and 18823. Convention dates, July 15, 1938, and Aug. 31, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Esters of 2-keto-l-gulonic acid and 2-keto-lgluconic acid are converted into the corresponding ascorbic acids by treating in aqueous solution with magnesium, iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, zinc or cadmium without the addition of acid or alkaline substances. Magnesium is particularly effective, optionally in the presence of a water-miscible solvent such as alcohol or dioxane. Examples describe the process in the presence of each of the metals mentioned above. In example 5, in which iron is used, the iron is removed by adding calcium ferrocyanide and the calcium by oxalic acid. Manganese, zinc, nickel and cobalt when used are removed as ferrocyanides, and magnesium as oxalate. Specification 428,815 is referred to.
