Abstract
521,648. Dyeing protein fibres. NILSSEN, O. B. A. Nov. 24, 1938, No. 34148. [Class 15 (ii)] Protein fibres, e.g., wool, silk or artificial fibres from casein, are dyed level shades, fast to washing and to light, by subjecting them to the action of (a) nitrous acid or a nitrite, (b) a salt of a mordanting metal, and (c) a compound, not containing a phenolic or aromatic amino group, capable of forming a complex compound with the metal. The reagents (a), (b) and (c) may be applied simultaneously or successively in two or three stages. Specified mordanting metals are aluminium, chromium, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium and uranium and specified complex-forming compounds are potassium cyanide, ethylenediamine, glycine, thioxamide and dimethyl glyoxime. A mordant dyestuff may be applied for shading purposes, additional mordant being, in this case, unnecessary. Complex nitrites of the mordanting metal, particularly of Co., e.g., sodium cobaltinitrite (in conjunction with a complex-forming compound), a cobalt nitritoethylenediamine or sodium dinitrito-bis-dimethylglyoxime cobaltiate, may be used in an acid bath. In examples, (1) wool is treated with an aqueous solution containing sodium cobaltinitrite and acetic acid, the solution being slowly heated to 50-60‹C. and so maintained for half an hour, whereupon the wool is rinsed and treated with a cold aqueous solution of potassium cyanide to obtain a deep wine-red dyeing; (2) wool is treated with an aqueous 'solution containing sodium dinitrito-bis-dimethylglyoxime cobaltiate and acetic acid, the solution being slowly heated to 60-70‹C. and so maintained for half an hour, whereupon the wool is rinsed to obtain a clear brown dyeing ; (3) natural silk is treated with an aqueous solution containing potassium nitrite, acetic acid and copper sulphate, the solution being then heated to 70-80‹C., whereupon the silk is treated for half an hour with a hot aqueous alcohol solution of thioxamide to obtain a greenish black dyeing.
