Abstract
521,586. Taking kinematograph images with relief effects. HARVEY, T. M. Aug. 24, 1938, Nos. 5883 and 34603. [Class 97 (i)] A camera, or a reflector directing light thereto, is carried by a table which is oscillated in an arc about an axis containing the object to be photographed in such manner that a line fixed relatively to the table continuously intersects the axis at the object; the table is mounted by a universal joint on a pillar, in the form of an articulated parallelogram to prevent sideways tilting of the table, and by a universal joint on another pillar farther from the object, the operative length of one pillar being adjustable by forming the pillar of elements relatively movable endwise by means which is operable during the oscillation and maintains the pillar operative during the adjustment. As shown, the mounting for the table 49 carrying a camera 100 is supported by an apertured plate 27 mounted on trunnions 26 on a ring 23 carried by ball bearings 22 on a ring 20 having legs 21. Handles 24, 28 are provided to facilitate adjustment of the position of the plate 27. The linked frame comprises parallel side members 35, 36 each having bracing members 37 forming a pyramid, the side members being mounted on shafts 33, 34, and carrying triangular end plates 41, 42 by bearings 44. The plates 41, 42 are connected by tie bars 43; the plate 42 is provided with a bracket 45 supporting a rod 46 carrying the ball of a ball and socket joint at the front of 'the table 49, and with two rollers 51 which engage the table and prevent sideways tilting. The rear of the table 49 is carried by a ball and socket joint 69 on the end of a pillar comprising relatively movable elements 66, 72, the element 72 being a screwed rod carried by a universal joint within a shell 75 secured to the aligned parts of a divided shaft 60 rockable by mechanism within a casing 61 carried by the plate 27. A bracket 62 is secured to the shell 75, is connected to the plates 41, 42, by a rod passing therethrough, and carries jaws 64 engaging flattened faces on the sleeve 66. The line 150 passing through the centres of the ball and socket joints, fixed relatively to the table, intersects the axis of oscillation at a point determined by the adjustment of the pillar 66, 72, the adjustment being effected by rotation of a hand wheel 78 to turn the screwed rod 72 within a nut carried by the sleeve 66; a sleeve 79 surrounds the sleeve 66 to contain oil, and its upper edge may be used for reading a scale 80, on the sleeve 66, indicating the distance of the point for which the pillar is adjusted. The oscillating parts are balanced by downward continuations 52, 53 of the members 35, 36 pivotally carrying a plate 54 bearing a variable weight 58, and by a downward extension 81 of the shell 75 carrying a rotatable screwed rod 85 supporting weights 83 secured to a nut 84. The rod 85 is connected to 'the rod 72 by the universal joint within the shell 75, and rotation of the wheel 78 to extend the pillar 66, 72 lowers the weights 83. The camera 100 on the table may be replaced by a reflector whereby light is directed through a right angle, either to a fixed camera, or to a second, fixed, reflector again directing the light through a right angle to a fixed camera.
