Abstract

521,195. Master control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and CROFT, E. H. Oct. 14, 1938, Nos. 29824 and 36686. [Class 38 (iii)] A controller is retarded in its forward motion by an escapement controlled by armature current. In Fig. 1 the controller is urged forward by pneumatic means 4, or alternatively by a stallable motor or slipping clutch and is restrained by an escapement. 11, 12 rocked by coils 13, 14 in circuit with selector segments 19, 20 on the controller and the contacts of an accelerating relay 15. In Fig. 2, the drum 27 is urged forward by a spring 28 strained by a pedal 24 and restrained by alternately acting pawls 59, 60. The drum 27 in its forward motion energizes contactors to . exclude armature resistance from the circuit of the motor 6 and thereafter weakens the field 12, finally opening the field contactor 8. When contactor 17 closes, the coil 17C is maintained over contact 17NO until the controller is returned to "off" position thereby preventing reinclusion of armature resistance during regenerative braking. The pawls 59, 60 are alternately withdrawn from the drum 27 by energization of fingers 35, 36 and are prevented from operation by accelerating relay AR lifting its contacts 96 under the action of motor current coil 7 and biasing coil 91, the coil 91 is variably excited by drum 26 directly associated with the pedal, so as to give variable acceleration as described in Specification 521,192. Depression of pedal immediately after release causes drum 27 to move forward without restraint as motor current is so small that the relay AR does not even lift its contact 95. Rheostatic braking is under the control of a separate drum 21 which, on movement from its " off" position, energizes coil BC of contactor B, the interlocks BNC1, BNC2 of'which open the circuits of contactors controlled by the power drum 27, and the interlock BNO closes to maintain the contactor B operative until both controllers 21 and 27 are returned to their "off position.
