[Glasses 142 (i), 142 (ii) and 142 (iii)] Vertical looms; letting off warps, take-up motions ; shedding motions; driving arrangements.-In a loom more particularly for weaving gauze fabrics the warp passes from a beam 125, round a driven sand &c. roller 124, and then upwards to the horizontally moving shedding mechanism. Some of the warp threads pass over two bars of the upper harness 42 and the others each through two eyes in the lower harness 43 and then descend to the driven takeup roll 128 and finally to the cloth roll 130 carried by counterbalanced levers 131. The harness 42 is carried by links 54 fast on a shaft 52 and links 55 loose on a shaft 53, while the harness 43 is carried by links 57 loose on the shaft 52 and by links 58 fast on the shaft 53. The shed is V-shaped and the tension of the warp is constant during shedding. The shafts 52, 53 carry intergearing toothed sectors 71, 70 and are oscillated by a crank pin 68.on a shaft 34 which alternately engages slots in discs 72 carried by the shafts 52, 53. Means are provided for locking the shafts 52, 53 when the pin 68 is not in one of the slots. The shaft 34, and .a shaft 35 operating the let-off and take-up rolls 124 128 and the picking mechanism are driven by a shaft 32 from the motor 30. A handle 149 may be thrown into gear so that the loom can be turned by hand, but this can only be done when a clutch in the shaft 35 is out and when the shuttle race is closed. Picking - motions; shuttle races; shuttles checking shuttles.-The shuttle race is of V- section and a part of one side 47 is hinged at 152. The shuttle 76 also is of V-section with a projecting part 172 containing the eye 171 to lay the weft close up to the fell ; no reed for beating up is used. The shuttle boxes are carriages 88 connected by springs 87 to sliding bars 86 pivoted to connected levers 83, 85 oscillated by a cam 77 on the shaft 35. The springs 87 are first stressed then a catch 93 holding the carriage 88 is released and the shuttle given a first impulse. A second impulse is given to the shuttle by driven rollers 100. These rollers 100, also brakes 113 on thecarriage 88 are moved into and out of contact with the shuttle at the appropriate times by cams on the shaft 35. 'Specification 521,286 is referred to.
