Abstract

521,048. Furnace linings. ALLMANNA. SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Nov. 11, 1938, No. 32863. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1937. [Class 51 (ii)] A composite lining for an induction furnace comprising an inner layer of material resistant to high temperatures and to mechanical and chemical action, and an outer heat-insulating layer, is made by first ramming the outer layer around a core and drying it out, and then ramming the inner layer around a smaller core. The material for the outer layer consists of grains of aluminium oxide bound together by aluminium silicate and an organic agglutinant and after the mass has been rammed the core is heated to allow its removal without 'causing the mass to lose its shape, after which the heating is completed at about 1,000‹C. by means of a smaller core which allows moisture to escape uniformly. The inner surface of this layer is then coated with a varnish containing zirconium oxide and chrome ore and the inner layer is rammed round a core preferably turned to a smooth external surface. The materal for this layer consists of zirconium oxide and a basic oxide, e.g., of barium, which are pre-coloured and crushed. An innermost lining of magnesite may be applied when necessary for the metallurgical process to be carried out in the furnace. The heat-insulating layer may be made porous by including in the mass organic substances which are volatilized by heat. Specification 500;057, [Group V], is referred to.
