Abstract

520,574. Cooling towers. HONIG, E., ZINN, W. V., and ANDREWS, W. C. Oct. 18, 1938, Nos. 28111/39 and 28112/39. Divided out of 524680 [Class 64 (i)] Condensation of water vapour around the top of a cooling tower is prevented by providing tubes 2 extending inwards and upwards from apertures 3 at the throat 4 of the tower to the central part of the top of the tower, where they pass through a cup 5 having apertures 7 in the base. The tubes may be of metal, synthetic resin, asbestos, asbestos cement or concrete. Cold air passing through the tubes causes condensation and precipitation of moisture, mainly in the cup 5. The tubes may project into .the cup 5 to prevent down-flow of water, and gutters or the like may be provided to receive condensate from the outside of the tubes. In an alternative, Fig. 2, not shown, the tubes may extend from an opening on one side completely across the tower to an opening on the opposite side at a higher level. The tubes may be of spiral, helical, " S," or other curved form. The tower may have a double shell.
