Abstract

520,108. Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces; electrolysis. MORLAND & IMPEY, Ltd., and RENDALL, A. G. Oct. 27, 1938, No. 31072. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In etching an aluminium plate for lithographic printing having an anodized surface coated with light sensitive emulsion, the etching action is supplemented by an electrolytic action. For this purpose, a pad carried on an electrically-conductive holder may be used, the pad comprising a body a, e.g., of wood, with an aluminium surface layer b, a layer of felt, leather or flannel d, a separating layer e of parchment or parchment paper, and a covering layer c of velvet. The pad is applied to the plate, and an electric current is passed through. The layer c is soaked in the etching agent, the layer d with an electrolyte such as glycerine or aluminium chloride, and the layer e with water or an electrolyte such as calcium chloride solution to prevent interming- ling of the solutions in layers c and d.
