Abstract

519,896. Purifying water. BIGNELL, J. C. Oct. 6, 1938. No. 29023. [Class 46] In an arrangement in which chlorine solution or other liquid reagent is forced into water passing through a pipe to a service tank by a mechanical feeding device, means are provided for stopping the feeding device when the service tank is full. The Figure illustrates a water supply system on board ship. Water drawn from a storage tank A by a pump A<3> is delivered through a pipe A<4> and filters A<5> to a tank A<6> supplying service pipes A<12>, A pump A<9> delivers reagent from a tank A<10> into the pipe A<4>. When the tank A<6> is full, a float valve A<7> is closed and the water directed through a bye-pass A<14> to a return pipe A<13>. At the same time the valve A<7> or a valve A" in the pipe A<13>, which is opened by water passing down, stops the pump A<9> electrically. The valve A' may also be used to stop the pump A<3>. A similar system is described for applying salt water treated with chlorine on board ship for sanitary flushing purposes. The water is drawn by the pump A' from the sea and the water bye-passed through the pipe A<1> is returned to the sea. The chlorine solution is forced by the pump A<9> to the inlet side of a strainer in the suction pipe of the pump A<3>.
