Abstract
519,859. Annealing wire. COOK, J.. Oct. 4, 1938. No. 28829. [Class 72] In an apparatus for annealing wire, the wire B is fed from a drawing die A over a sheave D through a tube E round a pulley J mounted in a water tank I and then over a pulley L, current being supplied by leads C, K to the die A and pulley J. During the progress of the wire through the tube E it is protected by steam produced by water supplied to the tube. In one form, Fig. 2, the tube is provided with a restricted portion Q and an enlarged portion R, water being supplied to the latter by a pipe U provided with an overflow pipe V, steam being generated in the part Q by the heated wire passing downwardly through the same. The wire is then cooled in the chamber R and leaves bv an opening T in a plug S. In a second form, Fig. 3, for very.thin wire, water is supplied to a chamber 2<1> by a pipe 4<1> with an overflow pipe 4<1> and steam is supplied by a pipe 3<1>. In a modification of the form shown in Fig. 2, the tube.is composed of an inner tube rotatable in an outer tube, both tubes being provided with longitudinal slots which may be caused to register when an intermediate portion of the wire is to be treated. A similar modification of the form shown in Fig. 3 is also described. The treated wire leaving the tank. It may be passed through a second cooling tube 0 supplied with water by a pump N.
