Abstract

519,689. Filters. KEENE, E. W. W. Sept, 24, 1938, No. 27877. [Class 46] A rotary suction filter drum is arranged so that both its inner and outer surfaces serve as filtering surfaces and scrapers are provided for removing the filter cake from each surface. As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, a drum is built up of leaves 40 on a framework comprising hoops 23, 24 and longitudinal bars 25. The drum is open-ended and is mounted in a casing 20 to dip into a tank 12 containing the liquid to be filtered. The hoop 23 is supported by arms from a shaft 15 which is provided with a distributing valve 18 and driven by a worm-wheel 17. The hoop 24 is supported and centred both within and without by rollers 27. The inner rollers assist in rotating the drum in that they are themselves driven by sprocket wheel and chain gearing from an internally toothed wheel 30 on the shaft 15. Each filter leaf has an envelope of cloth with a gauze support or a frame work comprising wooden battens 48, Fig. 15, and transverse metallic members 49. The leaves are held in position against brackets 53 bolted to the hoops 23, 24, by clamps 56 on bolts 55. Wires 63 having their ends bent to serve as clips extend between the boss 25 adjacent to both the inner and outer surfaces of the leaves and prevent undue distortion of the cloth under reverse pressure. The filtrate is discharged from each leaf through sockets fitting into recesses 52 in the brackets 53. Radial pipes 41 connect these recesses with bores in the shaft 15 and the distributing valve 18. The filter cake is removed from the leaves by scrapers 13, 14 which direct it into hoppers 19. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement in which two open-ended drums 11, 22, are arranged end-to-end on each side of a central web 10 fixed to a shaft 15 and Fig. 6 one in which two coaxial filter drums 11, 21 are attached to a web 10.
