Abstract
519,122. Chimneys and ventilating shafts. DYKE, H. G. Sept. 15, 1938, No. 26969. [Classes 25 and 137] The fires and ventilators of tall buildings are connected by short substantially vertical shafts to main shafts extending the entire height of the building. Fig. 1, shows a chimney breast comprising secondary flue shafts 4 having inlets 10 and dampers 9 leading to a main flue shaft 3 and secondary ventilation shafts 12 leading from inlets 13 to a main ventilation shaft 11. The shafts may be constructed from hollow blocks, the blocks 5 at the tops of the secondary shafts being formed with deflecting surfaces 6. A ventilating block 28 is provided at the top of each shaft. A cowl 16 provided above the top of each shaft is provided with internal walls 22, 23, 25 surmounted by cap 26, the arrangement being such that the prevailing winds entering through an opening 24 assist the draught and air blowing downwardly through the cap is deflected so as not to enter the shaft. Modifications are described in which (1) a single shaft space between the shafts 3, 11 is divided at intervals, the parts forming alternately secondary flue shafts and ventilating shafts (2) a shaft divided into secondary flues communicating with open fire places is connected to main shafts at each side at about ceiling level .(3) a shaft is divided into secondary flues communicating with open fire places, the secondary flues being connected to the main shafts at the sides alternately (4) the main shaft is arranged in a corner of the building and encloses triangular secondary shafts.
