Abstract

518,983. Treating gases with liquids. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Sept. 12, 1938, No. 26608. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1937. [Class 55 (ii)] A bell cap assembly in a distillation tower maintaining a constant velocity of gases through the bubble caps comprises an upwardly flanged aperture 6, a stationary cylindrical ring 3 with slots 8 in its walls round the aperture and a movable cap section 2 with a skirt portion slidably embracing the exterior of the ring and moved by the pressure of the upflowing gas to uncover a greater area of the slots when the gas pressure increases. The weight of the cap may be sufficient to balance the gas pressure or a weight 4 may be added. A screw 9 on the cap engages one of the slots to limit upward movement of the cap. A spring 5 on the cap 2 may engage the top of the ring 3. Caps 24 may be attached to a rod 25 which varies the open area of the slots by a motor 30 controlled by a manometer 31 measuring the pressure difference across the bell. The movable cap may have slots and be rotated to vary the area of opening of the slots 8.
