518,118. Preserving cereals. GRENIER, R. May 30, 1938, No. 16071. Convention date, May 29, 1937. [Class 49] In apparatus for preserving cereals by the use of carbon dioxide gas, the gases originally contained in the silo 3 are caused to flow in a closed circuit to effect evaporation of carbon dioxide ice until the desired carbon dioxide content has been obtained in the silo, any excess of gas being discharged to the atmosphere by an outlet 38 in the silo. The gases from the silo are circulated by a fan 26 and pipes 23, 25 through the jacket 29 of a vaporizer 27 containing the carbon dioxide ice and back through pipes 21, 19 and a distribution pipe 18. The carbon dioxide gas passes to the silo through pipes 31, 37, 19 and valve 33. By opening valves 36, 35, atmospheric air may be used to effect evaporation of the carbon dioxide ice. A germ and insect destroying substance such as ethylene oxide may be added to the carbon dioxide gas. Means for cooling and conditioning the gas may be included in the circuit either directly or in a by-pass.
