518,067. Sensitizing and stabilizing silver halide emulsions. KODAK, Ltd., and DAVEY, E. P. May 13, 1938, No. 14397. Drawings to Specifications. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic silver halide emulsion is supersensitized by a combination of a 2<1>- cyanine 4<1>-cyanine, or a: a1-carbocyanine with at least one heterocyclic nitrogen base containing an alkyl group on the basic nitrogen atom and an acylmethylene group in the adjacent position. The bases may be used in emulsions either containing or not containing sensitizing to prevent fog, and some of the bases sensitize silver chloride emulsions. Numerous examples of cyanines and bases are given, the latter being mainly derivatives of benzthiazoline, #-naphthathiazoline, and benzselenazoline, but 1:6- dimethyl-2-formylmethylene-1 : 2-dihydroquinoline is referred to. Tables and curves of the effect of various combinations are given. The emulsion binder may be gelatine, a resinous substance, or a cellulose derivative, and the emulsions may be coated on supports of glass, cellulose derivative, paper or resinous material.
