Abstract
517,243. Road-vehicle bodies and undercarriages. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 29, 1938, No. 25301. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1937. [CLasses 108 (i) and 108 (ii)]. [Also in Group XXXI] Relates to a method of motor car manufacture in which the vehicle is divided structurally into two major units, a so-called running gear unit and a self-sustaining body unit, and comprises a running gear unit consisting of front and rear wheel and axle assemblies, including spring suspensions therefor, a propeller shaft connecting these assemblies with a universal joint in its length, a transverse frame member carried on the propeller shaft and means detachable from the running gear unit for supporting the propeller shaft at a point between the front and rear wheel and axle assemblies. In the arrangement described, the complete body, Fig. 3 with mudguards,. bonnet, radiator grille, lighting equipment, petrol tank 37, clutch and brake pedals &c. forms a self contained unit carried on a pressed metal floor pan to which are bolted or welded &c., longitudinal frame members or sills 34 carrying shock absorbers 45. The steering column assembly 38 is mounted in the body, including the pitman arm 38a which protrudes through an opening in the floor. The clutch pedal 40 is secured to a cross shaft 39 journalled in the side sill 34 with a depending arm for attachment to the clutch operating means. The brake pedal is loosely mounted on the shaft 39 with a depending arm 41a for attachment to the brake gear. An opening 33a in the floor allows entry of the gear control lever. The body may thus be finished off completely and the doors locked, attachment to the running gear unit, Fig. 2, being effectible by purely external connections. For this purpose, the running gear unit, Figs. 2 and 9, includes cross frame members 52, 35, associated respectively with the front and rear wheel assemblies, and a third member 49 embracing the propeller shaft universal joint housing, which in the final assembly are secured to the longitudinal body sills 34, preferably by bolts with intermediate cushioning means shown in Fig. 10.
