Abstract

517,110. Partly electromagnetic switches. CHAMBERLAIN & HOOKHAM, Ltd., JAMES, S., and BRAINES, W. F. Sept. 12, 1938, No. 26546. [Class 38 (v)] In an electricity meter or other indicating or recording instrument wherein the meter mechanism drives a rotary member a so as to bring one' or more contacts c into engagement with stationary contacts o, in order to avoid the lack of accuracy of the instrument produced by the resistance to rotation of the body a owing to the frictional resistance due to the engagement of the contacts, the contacts are adapted to close an additional circuit to an electromagnet n which then attracts an iron bar e fixed to the rotary drum a. There is lost motion between the bar e pivoted at d and the arms h of the driving mechanism of the instrument so that when the magnet n is energized the bar e leaves the driving arm h and rotates till the contacts c, o become disengaged and the magnet circuit is interrupted. The meter mechanism continues to rotate till an arm h again reaches the bar e and drives it round till the next contact c engages a fixed contact. The drum a instead of carrying a contact c may have a projection which presses a contact spring into engagement with another contact spring.
