Abstract

516,237. Computing mechanism. WAYNE PUMP CO. June 22, 1938, No. 18540. Convention' .date, Aug. 11, 1937. [Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Change-speed gearing, for use in computing mechanism for driving a total cost indicator in liquid-dispensing apparatus, comprises a cone 382 of stepped gears, secured to a horizontal shaft 380, driven by a bevel-wheel 376 on a vertical shaft 354, driven by the liquid meter, the cone 382 being surrounded by a group of supplementary shafts 384, 386, 388, each carrying an axially slidable assembly comprising a feathered wheel 390 and a loose arm 396, carrying an idler 402, always meshing with the wheel 390, the idlers being independently movable into mesh with selected steps of the driving cone 382 by means of setting-shafts 420, 422, 424, which are parallel to each other and can be set from one side of the gear by means of hand-knobs 432. Setting of each idler is effected by first turning the corresponding setting-shaft, e.g., 420, so that. a locking-pin 438, fast thereto, is lifted out of one of a series of notches in a fixed quadrant 444, Fig. 6, and at the same time, the idler 402 is swung away from the stepped cone 382 by a toothed sector 414, fast to the setting-shaft 420 and engaging teeth on the idler-carrying arm 396. The setting-shaft 420 is then moved axially to bring the idler 402 opposite the desired step of the cone, and is turned back to swing the idler into mesh and effect locking at the quadrart 444. A spring 426 urges the idler into mesh with the cone, and the idlers are so arranged that the drive does not tend to disengage them therefrom. The supplementary shafts 384, 386, 388 drive a common total-price indicator 582 (not described) through differential gearing 570 (not'described), crown-wheel 576, bevel-wheel 578, skew gearing 586, 588, and a shaft 584. Near the total-cost indicator 582 is an indicator registering the number of gallons of liquid dispensed, and driven by the cone-shaft 380. The setting of the supplementary shafts 384 &c. determines the price per unit volume of the liquid dispensed, and this setting is indicated on both sides of the device by drums 494, 534, 552, turned by the axial movement of the setting shafts 420 &c., effective through rack-and-pinion gears 464, 466, 468, transverse shafts 478, 512, 538 and bevel gears 482 &c. In the example described, the drums 494, 534, 552 indicate respectively tenths of cents, cents and tens of cents. In order to prevent backward rotation of the driving shaft 380, there is provided a one-way positive brake, comprising a pawl 592, Fig. 8, carried in fixed guides 594 and co-operating with ratchet -teeth 590 inside the gear-cone 382. Specifications 425,473, 516,239 and 516,465, are referred to.
