Abstract

516,046. Endless-belt conveyers; screw conveyers. GLANVILL, A. B. Nov. 14, 1938, No. 33099. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] An electric motor 3 drives, through a belt 2, a pulley 1 which carries an eccentrically mounted roller 7 engaged by an arm 10 pivoted about a shaft 11 and carrying a pawl 14 adapted to engage the inner surface 15 of and drive a wheel 13 mounted on the shaft 11. The arm 10 is maintained in contact with the roller by gravity or a spring 12, and a bolt 8 carrying the roller is adjustable in a diametral slot 6 in an eccentric boss 5 on the pulley 1. A backstop resembling the pawl 14 may be provided to prevent reverse motion. The wheel 13 may be driven in either direction by providing another pawl similar to 14 on the opposite side of the arm and a corresponding backstop, the pawls and backstops being suitably linked together. The movement of wheel 13 may be varied by controlling the backward travel of the arm 10 by an adjustable screwed rod 19 carrying a buffer 22, or by an adjustable cam 23. The surface 15 and the edge of the pawl may be covered with friction material. When applied to the driving of a conveyer belt, in steps, it is desirable that there should be no tendency for the articles conveyed to continue moving after the belt has stopped and to ensure this, the cam 23 may be continuously rotated at the same speed as the roller 7, the surface of the cam being so shaped that the arm 10 is moved thereby with a smaller acceleration than would be imparted by the roller, which, ultimately takes up the drive. Similarly the cam gives a smaller retardation at the end of the stroke than would be given by the roller.
