Abstract

516,037. Spring-applied brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S. July 9, 1938, No. 20344. [Class 103 (i)] In mechanism for providing spring assistance in the application of brakes &c., a pedal or hand-lever is connected to a plunger acted upon by a pre-loaded spring, which when its loading is exceeded by the brake resistance, permits relative movement between the plunger and its container to operate a clutch, whereby another movable member is actuated to cause spring-loaded servo means to apply a thrust through another clutch to the brake transmission. The pedal or lever is connected to an eye 11 on the end of a plunger 12 slidably mounted in a sleeve 14, with a pre-loaded compression spring 16 interposed between the end of the sleeve and a collar 17 on the plunger, the other end of the sleeve 14 being closed by a plug 18 having an eye 19 for the connection-of a rod or cable leading to the brakes. When the resistance offered by the brakes to the initial movement of the sleeve 14 exceeds the loading of the spring 16, the plunger 12 slides relatively to the sleeve 14, and a conical head 15 acts on balls or rollers 22 to clutch the sleeve 14 to an outer sleeve 21, which is thus moved to the left, thereby rocking over centre the inner ends of spring-loaded plungers 30 mounted in a housing 10, the plungers 30 then exerting an axial force on the sleeve 21. The sliding movement of the sleeve 21 causes a tapered bush 27 to force spring-controlled balls 25 into engagement with the inner sleeve 14, so that the force applied by the plungers 30 to the sleeve 21 is transmitted to the sleeve 14 and so to the brakes.
