Abstract
514,680. Making sanitary pads. RAMSEY, A. R. J. (Teall, O. E.) April 11, 1938, No. 11069. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] The invention relates to machines for making sanitary pads, wherein pieces of absorbent material cut off a roll 20 are turned through a right angle and placed on a continuously moving strip of gauze &c. 54, the sides of the gauze strip are folded over the filler piece, the strip is severed between the pieces, and the ends are folded over. According to the invention the filler piece is turned and conveyed to the gauze strip by a device pivoted on a vertical axis. The filler material is cut by a reciprocating punch 42 of the shape shown in Fig. 7 ; this surrounds a pressure block 57 carried by rods 52 sliding through the cross head 43 and terminating in nuts 53 so that the block descends on to the material just before the punch 42. The conveying means may be a carrier 59 pivoted at 60, which after turning through a right angle lies above a plate 64. A wiper 65 operating through slots in the carrier and plate pushes the filler piece on to the gauze 54. Fig. 7a shows an alternative consisting of a rotating disc 127 carrying the pieces in between guides 130 whence they are pushed forward by fingers 129 mounted on the disc. The gauze is supported on a belt 71 and is drawn forward by driven rollers 77, 79, so recessed and synchronised that they do not compress the filler. pieces. The edges of the gauze are folded over in known manner by wedge plates 70 on which rest weighted rollers 73. The pads d then pass over a drum 90 carrying a blade 89 co-operating with a fixed blade 88 to sever the gauze between the filler pieces. A tray 95 picks up the leading end of the gauze of each pad from the drum 90 then rises to permit the pad to pass under it whereby the end is folded over. The pad is discharged into a tray 101, a creasing blade 107 descends upon the rear end, the tray tilts and discharges the pad between rollers 106, 114, whereby the rear end is folded. The pads fall into an inclined tray 118 up which they are pushed by a reciprocating p'ate 120 and are prevented from returning by friction with the walls.
