[Class 69 (iii)] [Also in Groups XVII and XXXIV] Apparatus for cleaning tanks wherein the cleaning liquid is fed through a feed pipe inserted into the tank comprises a reaction nozzle rotatably mounted relatively to the feed pipe and means operated by rotation of the nozzle for intermittently turning the nozzle about the axis of the feed pipe. The nozzle 33, as it turns about an axis 11-11, engages with an extension 42 of a shaft 40, and rotates this shaft, which, via an eccentric 43 and a rod 46, rocks a bell crank 48 which engages with a ratchet wheel 50. The ratchet wheel is fixed on the upper (fixed) section 21 of the feed pipe, but the bracket 49 which carries the bell crank 48 is secured to the lower section 29 of the feed pipe, this lower section being rotatably mounted at 25 on the upper section; the bell crank pulls itself around the ratchet wheel and the section 29, which carries inter alia the nozzle, is rotated step by step. In a modification (not shown) the ratchet wheel is engaged by a pawl eccentrically mounted at the upper end of a vertical shaft rotated by bevel gearing from the hub of the nozzle. The speed of rotation of the nozzle is automatically governed by centrifugally-acting weights 71 mounted in a plate 67 rotated from the nozzle hub via shaft 63 and sprocket-and-chain gearing 60. 61, 62. When the weights move outwards against springs 75 and, via rods' R, turn the diamond nut 66, the nut rubs against the bearing 64 and retards the system. Visible rotation-indicating means comprise an indicator 59 fixed to the end of a shaft 5.7 rotating with the section 29 and vertically reciprocated from an eccentric portion 55 on the shaft 40. A deflecting cone 89 directs liquid into the dome C. A pinion 18 engagning rack teeth 20 on the section 21 allows of vertical adjustment of the apparatus which may be clamped in position by means of a threaded bolt and contracting split collar 15. Steam-admitting openings with caps 82 are provided. A cover member 11 is clamped by rotating a wing 87 on a screw 84 into contact with a flange F, and clamping the screw by a nut 88.
