Abstract
A process for de-foaming liquids, e.g. coating compositions for paper, consists in submitting the liquid while under a vacuum to mechanical shearing action between relatively moving surfaces. A cylindrical tank 1, Fig. 1, provided with a valved inlet pipe 4 and vacuum line 5, has stationary blades 18 mounted on the inner wall. A central rotating shaft 6 is also provided with blades 19, which pass between and close to the fixed blades. The distance between adjacent horizontal edges of fixed and moving blades is 0.1 to 0.5 inch. The two sets of blades are preferably mounted tangential to the central shaft. In operation, the liquid entering through pipe 4 falls on a splash plate 9, and fills the vessel to a level a little below the top rotor blades, determined by a constant level feed control. A vacuum of 26 to 28 inches of mercury is maintained, and the liquid flows through the vessel at the rate of about 15 to 35 gallons per minute. The central blades rotate at about 120 to 150 revolutions per minute. Foam bubbles expand under the low pressure and are broken by the <PICT:0813856/III/1> shearing action of the blades. The de-foamed liquid passes to the cone-shaped base 10 of the vessel provided with a pair of blades 21, which are mounted close to the vessel wall and are inclined to sweep any solid materials downwards to a vertical screw conveyer 20. The bubble-free product is drawn off through a pipe 15 by a pump 16.
