Abstract
514,071. Trench mortars. SAGEB SOC. ANON. DE GESTION ET D'EXPLOITATION DE BREVETS. April 27, 1938, No. 12514. Convention date, April 29, 1937. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A trench mortar 1, one end of which has a base-plate resting on the ground, is connected to a bipod support by means of a universal joint. In the construction shown, the legs 3 of the support are fitted with interfitting cups 5 .which together form a sphere. The sphere is connected to a collar 4, embracing the chase of the mortar, by a nut 8 which engages with a screw threaded nipple 11 on the collar and with a flange 9 of a cheek 7 partially embracing the sphere. By tightening the nut, the cheek is pressed firmly against the sphere and the latter is pressed against a cap 6. The cheek is recessed at 12 to enable the legs to be folded to lie alongside the mortar. To enable the grip of the collar on the chase to be varied, the collar has a slotted trunco-conical end 13 adapted to be engaged by a trunco - conical surface of a tightening nut 15. The base-plate of the mortar is substantially of circular form, a side being removed at a point beneath the barrel. As shown in Fig. 9, the collar 4 is fitted with apparatus comprising transverse and longitudinal spirit levels 22, 21. The level 21 is carried by a drum 20 rotatably mounted in a socket 20a secured to the collar, the socket having a graduated edge for indicating the angle of elevation. Any lateral tilting of the mortar is indicated by the transverse level 22. Mirrors 23, 24 are provided so that the levels can be viewed from below. In a modification of the universal joint, a spring is arranged between the two hemispherical cups and, in another modification, resilient means are arranged between the sphere and the cap 6. According to a further construction, the sphere is carried by the collar 4 and the female part of the joint by the legs.
