513,561. Transmitters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., POCOCK, L. C., and LEMAN, H. S. April 6, 1938, No. 7816/39. Divided out of 513,529. [Class 40 (iv)] In a variable resistance transmitter or microphone in which granules of conducting material, for example, carbon, are agitated in response to sound waves for instance by means of an electrode, the fixed electrode structure of the transmitter is assembled in a recess or cavity in the transmitter casing and is permanently held in place therein solely by means of sealing compound. The transmitter, which is of the general form described in Specifications 435,130 and 494,293, comprises a moving electrode 8 and a fixed electrode structure, including the rear electrode 15 and its holder 16 and a centering ring 17, which is held in the cylindrical portion 11 of the casing 1 by sealing compound 19 which engages in grooves 18. The sealing compound may be formed by equal parts of a liquid phenol formaldehyde cement and finely-ground plaster of Paris, or by shellac cement with an inorganic filling agent, a phenol aldehyde resin cement, or a synthetic stopper incorporating an alkyl resin with inorganic filling agents. The sealing compound may be keyed to the casing by radial holes or axial grooves, and in the instrument shown in Fig. 6 the grooves 27 extend through the flange 13 at the inner end of the cylindrical portion 11 and are closed by discs 28.
