[Class 120 (ii)] In cop -winding machines in which the winding of a new cop is automatically started when the completed cop has been doffed, the yarn is severed by a knife 15 in such manner that an end 42 is left coiled around the spindle so that it forms an end for the new cop readily accessible to the weaver. As shown, the invention is applied to a vertical spindle machine provided with a spindle consisting of a lower squared portion and an upper cylindrical part, the knife, which may be of various forms, Figs. 5 ... 9 (not shown) operating at the junction. To prevent displacement of the coils the buttress which presses the cop during formation is provided with ample clearance over the spindle. Specification 513,364 is referredto.
