Abstract
513,338. Gun turrets. SHEVLIN, J. T. (Siemens Apparate und Maschinen Ges.). April 7, 1938, No. 10679. [Class 92 (i)] Gun or like turrets more particularly for aircraft comprise a rotary ring 2 carrying a second eccentrically mounted rotary ring 4, a mounting 7 for a gun or telescope being provided in an eccentric position on the ring 4. The arrangement is such that a slot in the turret for the gun or the like is avoided. The rings 2, 4 are rotated by power-driven shafts 10, 12, the former driving a circular rack 2b and the latter a double toothed ring 14 geared to the ring 4. Fig. 3 shows one arrangement of a reversible electric motor 18 directly driving the shaft 10, a clutch 20 controlled by an electromagnet 23 being operable to drive also the shaft 12, the respective paths taken by a gun being marked I, II in Fig. 4, if the gear ratio of the drive between the ring 14 and the ring 4 is 2: 1. Modified arrangements of the shafts 10, 12 and the clutch are described which result in different paths for the gun. The gun is fitted with a rotary switch 58 for controlling the direction of rotation of the motor, the switch being movable endwise to energize the electromagnet 23.
