Abstract
513,235. Carbon tetrachloride. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. April 4, 1938, No. 10250. Convention date, May 10, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Carbon tetrachloride is made by passing a mixture of a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon of low molecular weight having more than one carbon atom, or a chlorination product thereof, with a considerable excess of chlorine, e.g., an excess of 20-40 per cent., over-active carbon or another solid body of large surface, which may be impregnated with a metal salt, at a temperature above 400‹C., preferably 600-650‹C. Examples are given of the treatment of acetylene, tetrachlorethane and propane for the production of carbon tetrachloride containing small amounts of tetrachlorethylene, hexachlorethane and hexachlorbenzene. Other starting materials include dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene, tetrachlorethylene, ethylene chloride and hexachlorethane.
