Abstract
513,025. Sealing leading-in conductors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SCHNETZLER, K. G. March 23, 1938, Nos. 1760/39 (divided out of 512,257) and 2022/39. [Class 36] To increase the current-carrying capacity of the metal strip of a quartz or like strip-seal, the leading-in conductors are so attached to the strip that current passing from one conductor to the other flows through the strip in a direction substantially parallel to its thickness, whilst the parts of the strip around the parts thereof to which the conductors are attached are so embedded in the quartz or like material that the strip, together with the quartz or like material, forms the barrier separating the region around one conductor from the region around the other. Fig. 2 shows a molybdenum disc 1 sealed between the flanged ends of quartz tubes 4, 4<1>, lead-in conductors 2, 2<1> being disposed in the tubes and attached to opposite sides of the disc. The conductors 2, 2<1> consist of molybdenum strips bent back upon themselves to provide flat central 3, 31 which, prior to the sealing-in of the disc 1, are spot welded to nickel-plated molybdenum discs 6, 6<1> respectively, the nickel plating acting as a solder whereby the discs 1, 6, 6<1> are connected together, soldering automatically taking place when heat is applied to fuse the ends of the quartz tubes to the disc 1. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, overlapping nickel-plated molybdenum wires 2, 2<1> are spot welded on opposite sides of a molybdenum sheet 1 and the assembly is introduced into quartz tube 7 which is then collapsed on the sheet by heat, the heat also soldering the nickel-plating of the wires to the sheet Specifications 196,231, 198,322 and 205,784, [all in Class 39 (ii)], are referred to.
