Abstract

511,690. Coloured photographic materials. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. Feb. 22, 1938, Nos. 5552 and 5553. Convention dates, Feb. 23, 1937 and Feb. 3, 1938. [Class 98 (ii)] Photographic material, e.g., light sensitive silver halide emulsions, filter layers, or antihalation layers are coloured by incorporating therein a water-soluble and hydrolyzable derivative of a water-insoluble dye which contains at least one salt-forming group but which does not form salts stable to water with either hydrochloric and or caustic soda lye, the derivative having attached to the salt forming group an acyl radical containing a substituent promoting water solubility, and treating the material with a saponifying agent which splits the water soluble derivative. Suitable dyes are azo dyes and hydroxyl derivatives of insoluble anthraquinone, azine, oxazine, thiazine, arylmethane and pyrone dyes. The salt forming group may also be an NH2 or NH group, e.g., the condensation products of cyanuric chloride with amine which contain chromophoric groups. The derivatives may be formed by reaction with halides of alpihatic, cyclo-aliphatic, aliphaticaromatic or aromatic di- or poly-carboxlic acid halides or -sulphonic acid halides such as sulphoacetyl chloride, sulpho furane-carboxylic acid chloride, sulphobenzoyl chloride, benzoic acid sulphochlorides, benzenehexacarboxylic acid di- and trichloride, naphthalene trisulphochloride and reaction products of sulphur trioxide on benzoyl chloride or chlorosulphonic acid on benzoic acid. The substituent promoting watersolubility may be a carbonyl or sulphonic acid group or hydroxyl groups in organic acids or polyhydric phenols. The saponifying agent may be an acid or alkaline solution of salts or an acid or base and may be effected at any stage in the preparation or treatment of the material. The resulting material may be used for colour photography especially for the processes in which dye is destroyed at the places of the silver image. Seven examples of the use of suitable dyestuffs are given. Specifications 480,358, 496,463 and 505,504, [all in Group IV], are referred to.
