[Classes 54 and 69 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An apparatus, stated to serve for the measurement of liquids and gases and intended in the form shown for the measurement of liquids, comprises a container 27 into which the liquid is introduced through a tube 2 the perforated lower end of which is surrounded by a cup 3 forming a liquid seal. The air expelled during filling is conducted by tubes 5, 6 to chambers 7, 8, from which it escapes by a pipe 9 having an outlet controlled by a valve 10. The pressure produced in the chamber 8 by the air flow depresses a diaphragm 11 and causes a needle 12 secured to it to contact with mercury in a cup 13, thus completing the circuit of a motor 26 which operates a counting mechanism 20. On withdrawal of liquid, air is drawn into the tank, and the suction thereby produced in the chambers 7, 8 depresses the diaphragm 15 which closes the chamber 17, thus causing a mercury switch similar to the first to close the motor circuit. The motor then operates the counter 20 in the reverse direction, owing to its polarity having been reversed by a switch 21 which is operated by an arm 25 which engages under the head of a closure inserted into the top of the tube 2 when the container has been filled. It is stated that gases may be measured by connecting the gas conduit to the chambers 7, 8 of the mercury switches, and that the gas may be supplied from a container by displacing it with water.
