Abstract
510,916. Fluid-actuated valves. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and NORTON, J. L. May 14, 1938, No. 14458. [Class 135] A power device for actuating a control valve in a fluid pressure system (e.g., for the selective control of the hydraulic clutches described in Specification 465,612, [Group -XXIV]), comprises a piston member 39, rotatable through 90 degrees in a fixed sleeve 13 by a lever 65 through an extensible dog coupling 40, 67 to admit or release from its ends, via the respective channels 47, 46 and 45 or 48, 49 and 50, pressure fluid supplied from the inlet 32 and exhausted through the ports 33, 36 and longitudinal grooves in the sleeve 13 to outlets 25 or 26. The piston is thereby moved axially to impart the required movement to the control valve, which in the form shown is incorporated in that piston and comprises the circumferential grooves 53, 54 extended on the lower side of the piston at 55 and 56 to connect the controlled conduits 28, 30 with the inlet 32 and with one of the outlets 25 or 26. Stops 70, 71 limit the rotary movement of the piston 39, and a pin 60 engaging a groove 58, in the form of a closed rectangular loop around a projection 59, prevents axial movement of the piston except at the extremities of its rotary movement. Further, rapid and positive axial movement is ensured by the width of the groove 31, communicating with the inlet 32, being such that pressure fluid is admitted to the relative end of the piston somewhat before the other end is connected to exhaust 36 (see Fig. 6). Movement of the piston may be transmitted to a bell-crank 78, e.g., for the control of a corrector jet on the carburettor of an internal combustion engine, with which the hydraulic clutches are associated, by means of a spindle 73, the head 72 of which engages a slot in the piston. Leakage along this spindle or along the spindle of the lever 65 is drained away through a pipe 81.
